Upper St. Clair - Jeffrey P. Verner – Dental Emergencies: what should you do?
Life’s events can be unexpected and dental emergencies are no exception. Whether you’ve had a tooth knocked- out or experienced a broken restoration, there are certain steps you can take to minimize pain and damage while you’re scheduling an emergency appointment. It’s best to identify the type of emergency you’re having so Dr. Verner can provide the most accurate treatment plan.
Types of Dental Emergencies
Knocked out (avulsed) tooth: When a tooth has been completely dislodged, it’s important to handle it as little as possible. If you can, place the tooth back into its socket and bite down on a gauze to keep it place. However, if the tooth cannot be placed in the socket before coming to our office, be sure to place it in a container or milk or saliva. Apply a wet, cool compress at the site to help with any bleeding.
Fractured and broken teeth: There are various severities of fractures or break in dental enamel. For the less serious instances, treatment can involve simple fillings and smoothing out any rough spots. However, with a severely cracked tooth, a crown may be provided to prevent the crack from worsening. If the pulp has been damaged, you may need a root canal as well.
Lost Veneer: If you’ve lost a veneer, it’s important to define whether it has broken off in pieces or as a whole. If the whole veneer has been detached, be sure to wrap it loosely in a cotton or tissue and place it in a container, as Dr. Verner may be able to reattach it. However, if you our doctors feels that she cannot successfully bond the veneer, you will need a replacement. Your exposed tooth may be sensitive to hot or cold foods or drinks and may feel rough. If you are bothered by the surface of your natural tooth, buy dental wax to cover the surface until you can be seen for treatment.
